Innovation

From the mud huts built thousands of years ago to the log cabins that built this country one thing is true of building.  Occasionally, someone will stumble upon a revolutionaly idea, one great enough to change the face of building.  Building with Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF'S) is a perfect example of that happening today. 

In 2006 the Insulating Concrete Form Association celebrated the over 40 years of success of the ICF form.  First created by innovator and  enterprising inventor, Canadian born Werner Gregori, in the early 1960's the first patent was officially submitted in Canada on March 22, 1966 for an expanded polystyrene foam form. 

Gregori successfully filed his first U.S. patent application on October 24, 1968. His invention, an expanded polystyrene form was called, appropriately enough, "Foam Form." Many European patents were to soon follow. 

Originally, Gregori designed his form specifically to replace the steel forms still used in pouring concrete today.  Heavy, dangerous and cumbersome he sought to stream line the pouring process by eliminating many of the problems associated with the industry. 

Like many an early inventor, his idea was often scoffed at. 

Early Acceptance

Early acceptance of Gregori's idea was slow coming.  His design, while still used today, had some technical short comings.  Seeking greater acceptance, Gregori took his idea to Europe where building materials where often in short supply and fuel prices were considerably higher. 

He continued to improve on his product and sought out foundation contractors to install his product.  As more and more basements where installed homeowners where quick to notice that their basements where much warmer than conventional construction and lacked many of the problems associated with them. 

Other things such as wall cracking and water infiltration, problems which are common in poured walls and CMU (concrete block) basements, were greatly reduced and eventually virtually eliminated.  Significant strength was added to the wall, due to the foam forms design and the subsequent slow curing of the concrete. 

These factors, along with techological advancements in foam and plastics allowed for contractors to apply the energy saving block design above ground.   

Building Explosion

Today, thanks to one innovative and determined thinker, over 12 MILLION Energy Saving ICF stuctures have been built.  With well over 100 million sq. ft of new wall space being constructed annually, ICF energy efficient building is exploding around the world. 

I.C.F. technology and construction techniques have  expanded so that today, building entire houses from footer to peak with ICF is the norm.  Due to the excellent energy efficiency commercial buildings are becoming common as sought after lease space, and more and more homeowners are building for themselves.  Application include insulated garages, safe rooms, and retaining walls.
